A broken garage door spring in Chesapeake runs $240 to $420 installed for a standard residential pair, and you should have that number in writing before anyone touches the door. We replace torsion and extension springs across Chesapeake, from Greenbrier and Indian River through Great Bridge, Grassfield, Deep Creek, Hickory, South Norfolk and Western Branch. Heavier and wider doors go above that band, and our own paid Chesapeake invoices show exactly where: $534 for an extension spring pair in Great Bridge on July 24, 2026, and $785.70 for a TorqueMaster to torsion conversion in Western Branch on August 6, 2026. Both figures are published in our 2026 Cost Index, because we would rather show you real invoices than a teaser price.

How Much Garage Door Spring Repair Costs in Chesapeake

The honest answer is a band, not a single number, because door weight decides the spring and the spring decides the price. For a standard 16x7 or 9x7 residential door in Chesapeake, a matched pair runs $240 to $420 installed. That includes the 20,000-cycle upgrade we fit by default and our 7-year spring warranty. A single spring on a one-spring door sits lower. Doors that need more than springs sit higher.

Rather than leave it at that, here is our actual paid Chesapeake record for 2026, straight out of the published Cost Index:

  • $534 for an extension spring pair in Great Bridge, July 24, 2026 ($345 labor, $189 parts).
  • $674 for a TorqueMaster to torsion conversion, May 2026.
  • $785.70 for a TorqueMaster to torsion conversion in Western Branch, August 6, 2026, on a 16-foot Wayne Dalton door that needed a full-length torsion tube and its own conversion hardware kit.

Notice that the two most expensive Chesapeake spring jobs of the year were both conversions, not swaps. That is the single biggest cost variable in this city. If your door carries a Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster system, where the springs hide inside the tube, replacing like for like is often a worse deal than converting the door to standard torsion, and we will walk you through both numbers on site.

Across all of Hampton Roads our 2026 torsion pair invoices run $335 to $545, with one single-spring job at $270 and one full rebuild at $1,877 where the springs came with new track, drums and cables. We publish all of it. Compare that to the $150 to $350 national bands you will see quoted for Chesapeake by out-of-town brands, and you can see why we would rather show the invoices.

Torsion or Extension: Which Springs Your Chesapeake Door Uses

Stand inside the garage, close the door and look up. If you see a steel shaft running horizontally along the wall directly above the opening with one or two coiled springs wound around it, that is a torsion system. If instead you see a long spring stretched along each of the two horizontal tracks running back into the garage, that is an extension system. Chesapeake has plenty of both, and the answer changes the part, the labor and the price.

Diagram comparing a torsion system, with two coiled springs on a shaft above the door plus cable drums and lift cables, against an extension system, with one stretched spring and a safety cable along each horizontal track anchored at the rear track hanger
Simplified schematic. Torsion springs sit above the opening on a shaft. Extension springs stretch along the tracks, one on each side.

Torsion is the stronger and safer system, it balances wide and heavy doors better, and it is what we fit on the conversions above. Extension springs are common on older Chesapeake doors and on lighter single-car doors. If yours are extension springs and there is no safety cable threaded through the middle of each one, ask us to add them. A failing extension spring with no safety cable can whip across a garage, and that is the one spring failure in this trade that regularly damages more than a door.

Whichever system you have, we will not guess it over the phone. We look, we weigh the door against the spring that is on it, and then we quote. More detail on both systems lives on our Hampton Roads spring repair page and in the spring replacement cost guide.

Why Chesapeake Springs Break Early, and It Splits by Neighborhood

After enough calls here, the address usually tells us what we are walking into before we open the van. In Chesapeake the split has been consistent all summer, and it runs along the age of the housing stock.

In Grassfield and the newer southern subdivisions, mostly 2005 to 2015 construction, the failure is cycle count. Those doors came with builder-grade 10,000-cycle springs, a household opening the door four times a day burns through that in roughly seven years, and we are now well past that mark on those homes. The spring did not fail early. It reached the end of what it was sold to do, and nobody told the homeowner it had a rated life at all.

In the older doors near Western Branch, South Norfolk and Deep Creek, the failure is corrosion. Chesapeake is cut through by the Southern Branch and the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River and by the Intracoastal Waterway, and brackish humidity works on unprotected steel from the inside of the coil outward. A spring rated for 10,000 cycles inland realistically gives 7,000 to 8,000 here. It usually takes the hardware with it: on a Greenbrier call on June 13 a snapped cable had a 16x7 door hanging four inches low on one side, and on a Jolliff Road job in Western Branch the original nylon rollers had gone brittle in years of summer heat and salt before two of them cracked apart on a 95-degree morning.

That is why we fit 20,000-cycle oil-tempered springs by default rather than as an upsell. The upgrade is about $45 more in parts on a job that already costs a few hundred dollars, and in this climate it is the difference between coming back in seven years and coming back in fourteen.

“The Grassfield and Deep Creek doors are the ones I hate to see fail on a Friday afternoon, because a builder-grade spring or a rusted bottom bracket almost never quits at a convenient time. A broken spring is not an emergency you can put off either. The door is now hanging on a cable and an opener that was never built to carry it, and every time somebody hits the button hoping it will go up, something else gets bent. Unplug the opener, leave the door down, and call us.”

Same-Day Spring Repair Across Chesapeake

We run a van through Chesapeake every day, and springs are the one part category we carry in depth precisely because a broken one leaves a car trapped or a house open. Same-day whenever the right spring is on the truck, and we tell you on the phone if it is not rather than book you and disappoint you.

Coverage runs the whole city, ZIP codes 23320 through 23328: Greenbrier, Indian River, Great Bridge, Grassfield, Deep Creek, Hickory, South Norfolk and Western Branch. If your door is on the Portsmouth or Norfolk side of the line we cover those too, see our Chesapeake service area page for response times and the rest of the local job record.

What we do on a spring call, in order: measure the door and the spring that failed rather than assuming, check the cables, drums, bottom brackets and rollers the failure may have taken with it, write the quote out line by line, then do the work. If the door needs more than springs, you see that number before we start, not after.

A Real Chesapeake Spring Job, Start to Finish

The clearest example we can point you at is published in full. On August 6, 2026 we converted a 16-foot Wayne Dalton door in Western Branch off its TorqueMaster system to standard torsion. The photo at the top of this page is that door's own factory spring tube label, transcribed line for line in the write-up. The invoice came to $785.70, and we published the whole breakdown including the part where the total landed $5.70 above the top of our own quoted band, because a 16-foot door needs the full-length torsion shaft and a Wayne Dalton door needs its own adapter kit.

Read it here: Western Branch TorqueMaster conversion, August 6, 2026. It is the kind of detail we would want to see before letting a contractor into our own garage.

Chesapeake Garage Door Spring FAQ

How much does it cost to have someone fix a garage door spring in Chesapeake?

A standard residential pair runs $240 to $420 installed in Chesapeake, including the 20,000-cycle upgrade we fit by default and our 7-year spring warranty. Wider or heavier doors cost more, and our own paid Chesapeake invoices show where the top end lands: an extension spring pair in Great Bridge on July 24, 2026 came to $534, and a TorqueMaster to torsion conversion in Western Branch on August 6, 2026 came to $785.70 because that 16-foot door needed a full-length torsion tube and its own conversion hardware kit. Every number is written down before anyone touches the door.

Can you replace just one spring on a garage door?

Physically yes, and we have done it on a single-spring door for $270 on a 2026 invoice. On a two-spring door we will not recommend it. Both springs are wound the same number of cycles on the same day, so when one snaps the other is usually within months of going too. Replacing the pair costs less than paying a second service call, and it keeps the door balanced, which is what protects the opener.

Can a garage door spring be repaired?

No. A torsion or extension spring is a single piece of oil-tempered steel that stores its energy in the coil, so once it fatigues and breaks there is nothing to repair, it gets replaced. What can be repaired around it are the parts a failed spring damages on the way out: bent bottom brackets, frayed lift cables, cracked drums and opener gears that stripped trying to lift an unbalanced door.

Where can I find garage door spring repair in Chesapeake, VA?

Seaside Garage Door Experts covers all of Chesapeake for spring work, from Greenbrier and Indian River through Great Bridge, Grassfield, Deep Creek, Hickory, South Norfolk and Western Branch, ZIP codes 23320 through 23328. We are a family-owned licensed Virginia contractor, DPOR #2705188091, rated 5.0 across 79 Google reviews. Call (757) 777-3330 and we run a same-day van through Chesapeake whenever the springs are on the truck.

How long should a new garage door spring last in Chesapeake?

A builder-grade 10,000-cycle spring lasts roughly 7 years for a household opening the door 4 times a day, and salt air here shortens that further, so a spring rated for 10,000 cycles inland often gives 7,000 to 8,000 near the water. We fit 20,000-cycle oil-tempered springs by default, which is about $45 more in parts and roughly doubles the expected life to about 14 years. That upgrade matters most in Grassfield and the newer southern subdivisions, where the original builder springs are the ones we replace most often.
