Who Is the Best Garage Door Company in Newport News, VA?

Start with the thing the review sites will not tell you: on September 10, 2026 all three Newport News map-pack seats traced back to one company. Then judge the rest on four things you can check yourself in five minutes, a contractor license number printed on the company's own website, a price published before anyone drives out, a stated response window instead of the word "fast", and a real Newport News street address. Of the seven companies Newport News homeowners actually see for this search, two publish a license number and two publish a price. Five fail at least two of the four checks.

I own one of these companies, so read this the way you would read anything written by a competitor. Skip my opinion and check the cells. Every one is a link away, and the sections below show you exactly where to look. My own company fails one of the four checks in Newport News, and I have left that failure in the table rather than quietly rewriting the criteria around it.

Key takeaways

  • The Newport News map pack is narrower than it looks. All three seats trace to Wallen Garage Doors. Two are Wallen listings outright. The third is Prime Garage Doors and Openers, whose own homepage carries a banner reading that Prime is now Wallen Garage Doors. No Angi, Yelp, Porch or ThreeBestRated roundup on page one mentions this.
  • Two of the seven publish a Virginia contractor license number on their own site: Seaside (DPOR #2705188091) and Prime Garage Doors and Openers (HIC #2705189902). The other five say some version of "licensed and insured" with no number to look up.
  • Two of the seven publish a repair price before the visit: Sears Garage Doors of Newport News and Seaside. Apple Door Systems runs a "cost calculator" that is a contact form.
  • Only two publish a Newport News street address on their own website. Mine is not one of them, and that is a real strike against me on a Newport News job. Apple Door Systems ranks on page one with a page titled "#1 Garage Door Repair Company In Newport News, VA" while the nearest showroom it lists is in Williamsburg and the phone number at the top of that page is a Richmond 804 number.
  • For price sanity, the median paid garage door repair invoice in Hampton Roads was $324 across 47 of our own visits between April 17 and September 1, 2026. Spring work ran a median of $533 and opener work a median of $260.

The finding that changes how you read the map: three seats, one company

When you search a garage door company in Newport News, the three businesses in the map box look like three choices. On September 10, 2026 they were not.

  • Seat one: Wallen Garage Door Repair and Installation, 732 Bluecrab Rd Ste D, Newport News 23606.
  • Seat two: Wallen Garage Doors, the Yorktown listing at 1729 George Washington Memorial Hwy.
  • Seat three: Prime Garage Doors and Openers, 605 Industrial Park Dr Suite A, Newport News 23608. The first thing on Prime's own homepage is a banner reading "Prime Garage Doors & Openers Is Now Wallen Garage Doors," with the subhead "Same trusted service, now backed by the strength and expertise of Wallen Garage Doors," linking to wallengaragedoors.com.

There is a second, independent way to see the same thing. Devin Ross is named on Prime's own About section as the owner-operator of Prime Garage Doors and Openers. Devin Ross is also named by first and last name in two of the customer reviews displayed on Wallen's own Newport News page. Two separate sources, one conclusion.

None of this is wrongdoing. Companies merge, and Wallen is a real operation with four Hampton Roads offices and a large, genuine review base. But it changes what "I called three companies and they all seemed good" means in this city, and it is the single most useful fact on this page. If you want a second opinion on a quote in Newport News, the map box alone will not give you one. You have to go outside it.

The seven Newport News garage door companies, side by side

These are the companies that held a Newport News map-pack seat or an organic page-one position for "best garage door company newport news va" on a desktop search centred on Newport News on September 10, 2026, with the aggregator directories (Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack, Porch) excluded because they are listings, not contractors. Ordered by Google review count, largest first, after our own row. Ordering is not a ranking.

Every cell read on September 10, 2026 from the company's own website or its own Google Business listing. Blank claims were recorded as "not published" rather than guessed.

The four checks, and why each one matters in Newport News

1. A license number, not the phrase "licensed and insured"

Virginia licenses contractors through DPOR, the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. A real license has a number. "Licensed and insured" printed on a website has no number and cannot be looked up, which is exactly why it is the most common phrase on this comparison. Five of the seven use some version of it.

Two do better. Ours reads DPOR #2705188091. Prime Garage Doors and Openers prints HIC License #2705189902 in its footer, which is the single most useful thing on that site and the reason Prime ties us at three of four checks. Paste either number into the state lookup and you see the class, the status and the expiry date without asking anyone.

Why it matters on a garage door specifically: a torsion spring holds enough stored energy to break an arm, and a bad opener install can defeat the photo eyes that stop a door on a kid's bike. If something goes wrong, an unlicensed contractor is a problem you own. Worth saying plainly, and it cuts against me too: a license proves registration and insurance, not skill. It is a floor, not a ceiling.

2. A price you can see before the truck rolls

Five of seven publish nothing. Sears deserves the credit here that Wallen earned in the Virginia Beach version of this comparison: its Newport News FAQ prints spring replacement at $150 to $350 and opener repairs at $100 to $300, in public, with no form in the way. Ours are on the pricing page: $240 to $420 for a torsion spring pair on a double door, $180 to $280 for a single, $399 to $799 for a new opener installed.

Note what those two published ranges do when you put them side by side. A Newport News homeowner reading only Sears would expect $150 to $350 for a spring. Our own paid invoices put the Hampton Roads median for spring work at $533, because a double-door torsion pair with high-cycle springs is not the same job as a single low-cycle replacement. A published range is not a quote, and any honest contractor will tell you the same. It is a commitment to a ballpark you can hold us to.

When nobody publishes anything, the first number you hear is spoken by a technician standing in your driveway next to a door you cannot use. That is the worst possible moment to start comparison shopping, and in a city where the map box is effectively one company, it is also the moment you have the fewest alternatives.

3. A response window, not the word "fast"

"Same day" and "24/7" appear on almost every site here, and they are not the same promise. Prime is the most honest of the group and gets the least credit for it: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 7 PM, with weekday emergency service, and no 24/7 claim at all. Wallen tells you most appointments land in one to two business days, which is less exciting to read and more useful to plan around, though its Google listing reads "Open 24 hours," which is a different message. Apple Door commits to a two-hour arrival on emergencies. We run 7 AM to 9 PM seven days with after-hours emergency dispatch, and we publish what the after-hours call costs: $75 after 5 PM, $125 on Sundays and holidays.

Ask for the window in writing when you book. If a company answers "as soon as we can," you have learned something.

4. A street address in the city you live in

Two of the seven publish a Newport News street address on their own site, and both of them are the same company after the merger. Everyone else, us included, drives in.

That is not automatically bad. Plenty of good contractors run out of trucks and a shop one city over, and the drive from Virginia Beach to Denbigh is a real drive but a routine one. What matters is whether the marketing matches the map. Apple Door Systems ranks on page one with a page whose title tag reads "#1 Garage Door Repair Company In Newport News, VA" while the showrooms it lists are Richmond, Williamsburg, Ashland, Chesapeake and Waynesboro, and the phone at the top of that page is an 804 Richmond number. Integrity's map embed is not an address at all, it is a Google Maps search for the words "Newport News VA," and the BBB seal on the same page opens a Virginia Beach profile. Nobody is hiding. Nobody is volunteering it either.

Where I land on my own row: if a Newport News street address is the thing that matters most to you, Wallen and Prime are the honest answer to that specific question, and I would rather write that sentence than pretend the criterion does not count.

How to check any of this yourself in five minutes

  1. Look up the license. Go to dpor.virginia.gov and search by license number if the site prints one, or by business name if it does not. You are looking for an active status and a class that covers the work. If the name on the site does not match any record, ask why before you book.
  2. Check whether your "three quotes" are three companies. This is the Newport News-specific step. Open each company's homepage and look for merger or "now part of" banners, then compare the phone numbers and the technician names in recent reviews. Two listings at different addresses can be one dispatch board.
  3. Read the review count, not just the stars. Open the Google listing and sort reviews by newest. A 4.9 built over ten years can hide a rough current quarter. Three recent reviews naming the same technician tell you more than three thousand old ones.
  4. Ask for the price in writing before the visit. Text or email works: "What is your range for a double-door torsion spring pair, and what is your service call fee if I decline the work?" A company that will not answer that in writing will not surprise you pleasantly later.
  5. Sanity-check the quote. Hold it against real local invoice data. Our Hampton Roads cost index publishes 51 paid invoices with the medians by service and by city, plus the raw CSV, so you are not comparing a quote against a number somebody typed.

"I went into this table expecting the Peninsula to look like Virginia Beach. It does not. Virginia Beach has eight companies competing. Newport News has a map box that is one company in three seats." That is not a complaint about Wallen, who I have crossed paths with on jobs and who run a real operation with real trucks. It is a warning about a habit. Homeowners are told to get three quotes, and in Newport News the three easiest quotes to get may all price off the same board. When someone in Denbigh calls me at 8 PM with a snapped spring and a car stuck inside, the useful thing I can offer is not that I am closer, because I am not. It is a published number they can hold me to before I get in the truck.

Methodology

Check date: September 10, 2026. Companies included: the seven contractors that held a Newport News local pack seat or an organic page-one position for "best garage door company newport news va" on a desktop search centred on Newport News that morning. Aggregator directories that ranked on the same page (Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack, Porch and the ThreeBestRated listing) were excluded because they are directories rather than contractors. Sources per cell: the license, price, response-window and address cells come from each company's own public website, read in full on the check date. The rating and review-count cells come from each company's Google Business listing on the check date, except Apple Door Systems and Precision Garage Door Service, which publish a company-wide or franchise-wide figure on their own sites and where that figure is used and labelled as such. The pack finding rests on two independent sources: the merger banner on Prime Garage Doors and Openers' own homepage, and Devin Ross being named both as Prime's owner-operator on Prime's site and by name in customer reviews published on Wallen's own Newport News page.

What was not measured: price actually charged, technician skill, warranty terms honoured after the fact, insurance limits, complaint history, or how any of these companies treats a job that goes wrong. Those are the things that matter most and none of them can be read off a homepage. This page measures disclosure, which is the part you can verify before you pick up the phone. Known bias: Seaside Garage Door Experts is my company and it is one of the seven rows. I chose the four criteria before pulling the data, my own company fails the address check, and Prime Garage Doors and Openers ties us at three of four. That is the check on whether the criteria were rigged.

Corrections: if your company is on this table and a cell is wrong, or you have since published a license number or a price, email [email protected] and I will update the row and note the date. I will re-run all seven checks quarterly.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best garage door company in Newport News, VA?

There is no single answer that fits every job, so use checkable criteria instead of a claim. Of the seven Newport News companies compared here on September 10, 2026, two publish a Virginia contractor license number on their own website (Seaside Garage Door Experts, DPOR #2705188091, and Prime Garage Doors and Openers, HIC #2705189902) and two publish a repair price before the visit (Seaside and Sears Garage Doors of Newport News). Also worth knowing before you pick: all three Newport News map-pack seats trace back to one company, because Prime Garage Doors and Openers announces on its own homepage that it is now Wallen Garage Doors.

How many garage door companies actually serve Newport News?

Fewer than the map suggests. On September 10, 2026 the Newport News local pack showed three seats, and all three trace to Wallen Garage Doors: seat one is the Wallen listing at 732 Bluecrab Rd, seat two is the Wallen listing in Yorktown, and seat three is Prime Garage Doors and Openers at 605 Industrial Park Dr, whose own homepage banner reads that Prime is now Wallen Garage Doors. Two more national or regional brands rank organically, Precision Garage Door Service and Apple Door Systems, and both are dispatched from outside Newport News.

How much does garage door repair cost in Newport News, VA?

Two of the seven companies here publish a number. Sears Garage Doors of Newport News lists spring replacement at $150 to $350 and opener repairs at $100 to $300. Seaside publishes $240 to $420 for a torsion spring pair on a double door and $180 to $280 for a single. For a sanity check against real invoices rather than advertised ranges, the median paid garage door repair invoice across 47 Seaside visits in Hampton Roads between April 17 and September 1, 2026 was $324, with spring work at a median of $533.

How do I choose a garage door repair company in Newport News?

Run four checks that take about five minutes. Look for a Virginia contractor license number printed on the company's own site and confirm it at dpor.virginia.gov, look for a price range published before anyone drives out, look for a stated response window instead of the word fast, and look for a Newport News street address rather than a city-level map pin. Five of the seven companies here fail at least two of those four checks.
