Who Are the Best Rated Garage Door Companies in Hampton Roads?

Start with the thing most lists get wrong: Hampton Roads is a seven-city region, and Hampton is one city inside it. On September 18, 2026 I pulled every garage door company holding a Google listing with a published street address across all seven cities. There are 14 such listings, and they trace to 8 company names. Six of the 14 sit in Chesapeake alone. Norfolk and Portsmouth, two of the most central cities in the region, have none at all.

I own one of these companies, so read this the way you would read anything written by a competitor. Skip my opinion and check the cells. Every address below is one Google Maps search away, and the section near the bottom shows you exactly how to check each claim yourself. If a cell here is wrong or goes stale, email me and I will fix it and date the correction.

Key takeaways

  • Fourteen street-address listings, eight company names. Four companies hold seats in more than one city, so the choice looks wider than it is. Lion and Wallen each hold three.
  • Norfolk: zero. Portsmouth: zero. Every company answering a call in those two cities is driving in from somewhere else, including mine.
  • Chesapeake holds six of the fourteen, and two of those six belong to the same company on two different Chesapeake streets.
  • Star ratings do not separate anyone here. All eight names sit between 4.3 and 5.0. Review counts run from 15 to 2,943, which measures company age and size, not the technician who shows up at your house.
  • For price sanity: the median paid invoice across 51 of our own Hampton Roads jobs from April to September 2026 was $345. Opener repair ran a median of $149 and torsion spring replacement $497.

First, Hampton Roads is a region. Hampton is one city inside it.

Hampton Roads means seven cities: Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton and Newport News. Hampton, Virginia is a city inside the Hampton Roads region. It is not another name for the region, and the difference is not academic.

I checked what Google actually returns for this search. On a mobile search for "best garage door repair hampton roads" centred on Virginia Beach on September 18, 2026, four of the page-one results answered a question nobody asked. The Yelp list page titled "THE BEST 10 GARAGE DOOR SERVICES IN HAMPTON, VA" was scoped to the city. So was the Yelp question page "Where can I find the best garage door repair services in Hampton, VA". So were Precision's own location page for Hampton and Apple Door's service-area page for Hampton, the latter titled "#1 Garage Door Repair Company In Hampton, VA". If you live in Suffolk and you read those four results as regional roundups, you are reading a list of companies picked for a city roughly 25 miles and one tunnel away from you.

The water is the second half of the problem. The region is split by the Hampton Roads harbour. The Southside cities are Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk. The Peninsula cities are Hampton and Newport News. The two interstate crossings between them are the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on I-64 and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664. A "same-day" promise from a company based on the far side of a tunnel is a different promise than the same words from a company already on your side, and no star rating tells you which one you are getting.

The finding that changes how you read the map: 14 listings, 8 companies

Group the fourteen listings by company instead of by city and the market shrinks. Four names account for ten of the fourteen listings.

The same fourteen listings grouped by company name instead of by city, read September 18, 2026. Companies are grouped where their listings share a website domain.

One of those rows needs stating plainly rather than being tidied away. The listing titled "Wallen Garage Door Repair & Installation" at 605 Industrial Park Dr in Newport News, rated 5.0 across 252 reviews, carries a business description written entirely about a different company, "Prime Garage Doors and Openers LLC", and its listed website is primegaragedoorservices.com rather than wallengaragedoors.com. I am not going to guess why. I am telling you what the listing said on the date I read it, because if you call the number on that listing you should know whose name is on the description.

This matters for the same reason the Newport News version of this page matters: when all three map-pack seats in a city trace to one company, a homeowner comparing three listings thinks they are getting three opinions and three quotes. They are getting one.

Which garage door companies have a street address in your city

This is the table the roundups do not publish. A street address is not proof of quality, and its absence is not proof of anything bad. What it tells you is where the truck starts its day, which is the single biggest input into whether "same-day" is realistic on a Friday afternoon.

Two things are missing from that table on purpose. Seaside Garage Door Experts is not in it, because we are a service-area business and publish no public street address, so by this specific check we fail it too. Neither is Integrity's Newport News listing, for the same reason. I am not going to put my own company in a table of street addresses it does not qualify for.

If your door is down right now, the address question can wait. Call the company that will tell you the price and the arrival window on the phone. Ours is (757) 777-3330, and same-day garage door repair across all seven cities is what we do most days of the week.

Why Norfolk and Portsmouth have no garage door company of their own

Norfolk is the second largest city in Virginia. Portsmouth sits directly across the Elizabeth River from it. Between them they hold a large share of the region's older housing stock, which is exactly the stock that breaks springs and warps panels. And on September 18, 2026 neither city contained a single garage door company with a published street address in the Google local index. I ran a tighter search centred on Portsmouth with a 12 kilometre radius to make sure the wider regional pull had not simply missed them, and it returned two companies, both with Chesapeake and Newport News addresses.

Read that carefully, because it is easy to overstate. It does not mean nobody serves Norfolk or Portsmouth. It means every company serving those two cities does it the way we do, as a service-area business dispatching trucks rather than running a storefront there. That is a completely normal way to run this trade. The practical consequence is narrow and useful: in Norfolk and Portsmouth the "local street address" check is worthless, because nobody passes it. In those two cities you have to judge on what a company publishes instead.

Which is why the Norfolk and Portsmouth pages on this site carry the response detail that an address would otherwise imply, and why the four checks below matter more there than anywhere else in the region.

The four checks, and our own answers to all four

I chose these four before pulling any data, and I have already run them company by company on eight Virginia Beach companies, where only one cleared all four. The region-wide version of that audit is not done yet and I am not going to fake the cells. What follows is the method, plus our own answers in full, which you can check tonight. The long version of the same argument, with the phone script and the three scam patterns we actually see here, is in how to choose a garage door repair company in Hampton Roads.

1. A license number, not the phrase "licensed and insured". Anyone can type those three words. A number can be looked up. Ours is Virginia DPOR Contractor #2705188091, and the lookup takes about forty seconds at dpor.virginia.gov.

2. A price published before anyone drives out. Not a "free estimate", which is a visit, and not a calculator that wants your phone number first. An actual range. Ours: torsion spring pair $240 to $420, opener repair and service from $149, opener installation $399 to $799. Our after-hours surcharge is published too, because that is the number that surprises people: $120 on weeknights after 6 PM and on Saturdays, $175 on Sundays and holidays, quoted on the phone before we dispatch.

3. A stated response window, not the word "fast". Ask for a two-hour window and see whether you get one. If a company will not commit to a window on the phone, it will not commit to one when the truck is late.

4. A street address in the city you live in. Use the table above. And in Norfolk and Portsmouth, skip this check entirely, because as established, no company passes it.

"The honest answer about addresses in this region is that they tell you less than people think. I have driven from the Peninsula to a Chesapeake call and beaten a company with a Chesapeake address to the same driveway, because they were already booked and I was not. What an address actually tells you is where the truck sleeps. What tells you whether you are about to get a fair number is whether the company will say the number out loud before it drives out."

What a garage door repair actually costs across the seven cities

This is the part a company list cannot give you, because it needs invoices rather than opinions. These are our own paid invoices, 51 of them, April through September 2026, across six of the seven cities. The median paid invoice was $345.

Median paid invoice by service, from 51 Seaside invoices across Hampton Roads, April to September 2026. The invoice count is printed beside every median so you can see which ones are thin.

Opener installation6$699
Labor-only adjustment or minor repair5$150
Extension spring replacement4$473

Split the same invoices by city and the honest answer is that most cities do not have enough of them to support a median, so the table says so rather than printing a figure that would read as harder data than it is.

The same 51 invoices split by city. Only two cities carry enough invoices for the median to mean anything, and the table says so instead of printing a number that would mislead you.

Newport News shows zero in this sample, which is a gap in our own data and not a claim about the city. The fuller version of this, with the labour and parts split on every line, is the Hampton Roads garage door repair cost index. If a quote you have been given sits far outside these bands in either direction, that is the moment to get the exact number for your own door in writing before you agree to anything.

How to check any of this yourself in five minutes

The address cells: search the company name in Google Maps. The address either shows or it does not. A listing with no address is a service-area business, which is fine, but then the address check does not apply to it.

The multi-seat finding: click through to the website on two listings with different city addresses. If the domain is the same, it is one company holding two seats. That is how Lion, Wallen, Precision and Garage Door Enterprises resolve to four names across ten listings.

The license: go to dpor.virginia.gov, open the license lookup, and enter the number. If a company gives you the phrase instead of the number, ask for the number.

The region confusion: whenever a page is titled for "Hampton", check whether it means the city or the region. Ours says Hampton Roads and lists all seven cities, which is the test any regional page should pass.

Method, limits and corrections

Check date: September 18, 2026. How the population was built: Google local business listings for garage door companies, pulled through the DataForSEO local index, from three searches: a 35 kilometre radius centred on Norfolk, a 12 kilometre radius centred on Portsmouth, and a 22 kilometre radius centred between Hampton and Newport News. Together those cover the seven cities. Every listing returned with a street address inside one of the seven cities was included, which is how the count reached fourteen. Rating and review cells are each company's own Google figures on the check date. The SERP evidence in the region section comes from a live mobile search for "best garage door repair hampton roads" centred on Virginia Beach on the same date. The cost tables come from 51 Seaside paid invoices dated April to September 2026, the same dataset published in the cost index.

What was not measured: license status, published pricing and response windows were not audited company by company across the region, only in Virginia Beach and Newport News where dedicated comparisons exist. Nor were technician skill, warranty terms actually honoured, insurance limits, or complaint history. None of those can be read off a listing, and the ones that matter most cannot be read off anything except a job that went wrong.

Two honesty notes. First, our own Google review count reads 5.0 across 81 reviews from a direct profile read on the check date, while the same company's row in the bulk local index read 65 on that date. The two endpoints disagree. I have used the direct profile figure and I am flagging the disagreement rather than quietly picking the bigger number. Second, a listing count from one index on one day is a snapshot. Listings get created, merged and suspended constantly, so treat the fourteen as a dated reading, not a permanent fact.

Known bias: Seaside Garage Door Experts is my company. It is deliberately absent from the address table, because it fails that check, and it is the source of the cost data, which is stated openly. Corrections: if your company is on this page and a cell is wrong, or you have opened a location since the check date, email [email protected] and I will update the row and note the date. I re-run this pull quarterly.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the best rated garage door companies in Hampton Roads?

Use checkable facts rather than a claim, because on September 18, 2026 the eight company names holding a street-address listing across the seven cities all rated between 4.3 and 5.0 on Google, which means the star rating separates almost nobody. The largest local review base belongs to Precision Garage Door at 4.9 across 2,943 reviews in Virginia Beach, and Wallen Garage Door Repair and Installation is second at 4.9 across 1,097 reviews in Newport News. Pick on what a company publishes before it drives out: a contractor license number you can look up, a price, and an arrival window.

Where can I get my garage door repaired in Hampton, VA?

Hampton the city had exactly one garage door company with a Hampton street address in the Google local index on September 18, 2026: Lion Garage Door Repair and Installation at 6000 Incubator Rd, rated 4.4 across 113 reviews. Every other company that answers a Hampton call drives in, most of them across the water from the Southside. If a search result is titled for Hampton, check whether it means the city of Hampton or the wider Hampton Roads region, because the two are not the same place.

Which cities does Hampton Roads include?

Hampton Roads is a seven-city region: Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton and Newport News. Hampton, Virginia is one city inside that region, not another name for it, and the confusion matters because most of the top-ranked company lists for this search are scoped to the city of Hampton alone. The region is also split by water, with the Southside cities on one side and the Peninsula cities of Hampton and Newport News on the other.

What is the average cost of repairing a garage door?

Across 51 of our own paid invoices in Hampton Roads between April and September 2026 the median was $345. By service the medians were $149 for opener repair (11 invoices), $497 for torsion spring replacement (8 invoices), $697 for a TorqueMaster to torsion conversion (6 invoices) and $699 for an opener installation (6 invoices). A quote well outside those bands is worth a second opinion before you sign.
