Buyer's Comparison · Checked September 9, 2026 · by David Yifrach, Owner, Seaside Garage Door Experts · Virginia DPOR Contractor #2705188091

Who Is the Best Garage Door Repair Company in Virginia Beach?

Judge it on four things you can check yourself in five minutes: a contractor license number printed on the company's own website, a price published before anyone drives out, a stated response window instead of the word "fast", and a real Virginia Beach street address. On September 9, 2026 I ran those four checks on the eight companies Virginia Beach homeowners actually see for this search. One cleared all four (Seaside Garage Door Experts). One cleared three (Wallen Garage Doors). The other six failed at least two.

I own one of these companies, so read this the way you would read anything written by a competitor: skip my opinion and check the cells. Every one is a link away, and the section below shows you exactly where to look. If a number here is wrong or stale, email me and I will correct it and date the correction.

Key takeaways

  • Only one of the eight companies prints a Virginia contractor license number on its own website. Six say "licensed and insured" with no number to look up. That is not proof anyone is unlicensed. It means the work of checking falls on you.
  • Only two of the eight publish a repair price before the visit: Seaside and Wallen Garage Doors. Two more run "cost calculators" that ask for your phone number before showing a figure.
  • Star ratings barely separate anyone. Seven of the eight sit between 4.8 and 5.0. Review counts run from 79 to 2,934, which measures company size and age far more than it measures the tech who shows up at your house.
  • Three of the eight publish no Virginia Beach street address at all, and one of them ranks on page one with a page titled "#1 Garage Door Repair Company In Virginia Beach" while its nearest showroom is in Chesapeake.
  • For price sanity: the median paid garage door repair invoice in Hampton Roads was $324 across 47 of our own visits between April 17 and September 1, 2026. Spring work ran a median of $533.

The eight Virginia Beach garage door companies, side by side

These are the companies that appeared in the Virginia Beach local pack and on organic page one for this search on September 9, 2026, plus Wallen Garage Doors, which the aggregator listings rank locally. Ordered by Google review count, largest first, after our own row. Ordering is not a ranking.

Every cell read on September 9, 2026 from the company's own website or its own Google Business listing. Blank claims were recorded as "not published" rather than guessed.

The four checks, and why each one matters

1. A license number, not the phrase "licensed and insured"

Virginia licenses contractors through DPOR, the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. A real license has a number. "Licensed and insured" printed on a website has no number and cannot be looked up, which is exactly why it is the most common phrase on this comparison. Six of the eight sites use some version of it. Ours reads DPOR #2705188091, and you can paste that into the state lookup and see the class, the status and the expiry date without asking me anything.

Why it matters on a garage door specifically: a torsion spring holds enough stored energy to break an arm, and a bad opener install can defeat the photo eyes that stop a door on a kid's bike. If something goes wrong, an unlicensed contractor is a problem you own. Also worth knowing, and it cuts against me too: a license proves registration and insurance, not skill. It is a floor, not a ceiling.

2. A price you can see before the truck rolls

This is the one that surprised me when I ran the checks. Six of eight publish nothing. Two run calculators that want your name, email and phone before they show a number, which is a lead form wearing a calculator's clothes. Wallen deserves credit here: their FAQ prints torsion spring replacement at $250-$850, opener repairs at $150-$350 and roller and hardware work at $100-$250, in public, with no form. Ours are on the pricing page: $240-$420 for a torsion spring pair on a double door, $180-$280 for a single, $399-$799 for a new opener installed.

A published range is not a quote and any honest contractor will tell you the same. It is a commitment to a ballpark you can hold us to. When nobody publishes anything, the first number you hear is spoken by a technician standing in your driveway next to a door you cannot use, and that is the worst possible moment to start comparison shopping.

3. A response window, not the word "fast"

"Same day" and "24/7" are on almost every site here, and they are not the same promise. Four Seasons is honest about the edge case: open 24 hours Monday through Saturday, Sunday by appointment. Wallen tells you most appointments land in one to two business days, which is less exciting to read and more useful to plan around. Apple Door commits to a two-hour arrival on emergencies. We run 7 AM to 9 PM seven days with after-hours emergency dispatch, and we publish what the after-hours call costs: $75 after 5 PM, $125 on Sundays and holidays.

Ask for the window in writing when you book. If a company answers "as soon as we can," you have learned something.

4. A street address in the city you live in

Three of the eight publish no Virginia Beach address on their own site. That is not automatically bad. Plenty of good contractors run out of trucks and a shop one city over, and a Chesapeake or Norfolk shop is twenty minutes from most of Virginia Beach. What matters is whether the marketing matches the map. Apple Door Systems ranks on page one with a page whose title tag reads "#1 Garage Door Repair Company In Virginia Beach, VA" while the showrooms it lists are Richmond, Williamsburg, Ashland, Chesapeake and Waynesboro. A1's Virginia Beach page carries a contact form labelled Richmond and an 804 number in the accessibility notice. Nobody is hiding, but nobody is volunteering it either.

How to check any of this yourself in five minutes

  1. Look up the license. Go to dpor.virginia.gov and search by license number if the site prints one, or by business name if it does not. You are looking for an active status and a class that covers the work. If the name on the site does not match any record, ask why before you book.
  2. Read the review count, not just the stars. Open the company's Google listing and sort reviews by newest. A 4.9 built over ten years can hide a rough current quarter. Three recent reviews naming the same technician tell you more than two thousand old ones.
  3. Ask for the price in writing before the visit. Text or email works: "What is your range for a double-door torsion spring pair, and what is your service call fee if I decline the work?" A company that will not answer that in writing will not surprise you pleasantly later.
  4. Check the address against a map. Paste the address into Google Maps. If the site shows no address, that is your answer for this check, and it is worth asking where the truck actually starts its day.
  5. Sanity-check the quote. Hold it against real local invoice data. Our Hampton Roads cost index publishes 51 paid invoices with the medians by service and by city, and the raw CSV, so you are not comparing a quote against a number somebody typed.

If your door is broken right now

You do not have five minutes, and that is fine. Call two companies, ask each one for the range and the arrival window, and go with whoever answers both questions plainly. Ours: (757) 777-3330, or book online.

"I built this table expecting our license number to be the boring column. It turned out to be the whole story." Every company on this page is a real business with real trucks and real reviews, and I have crossed paths with most of them on a job at some point. But six of eight will not print a number you can look up, and six of eight will not print a price. Those are choices, not accidents. When a homeowner in Kempsville calls me at 8 PM with a snapped spring and a car stuck inside, the reason they trust the number I quote over the phone is that they already read it on the website an hour earlier.

Methodology

Check date: September 9, 2026. Companies included: the eight that held a Virginia Beach local pack seat or an organic page-one position for "best garage door repair company in virginia beach" on a desktop search centred on Virginia Beach that morning, plus Wallen Garage Doors, which the Thumbtack listing on that same page ranks first locally. Sources per cell: the license, price, response-window and address cells come from each company's own public website, read in full on the check date. The rating and review-count cells come from each company's own Google Business listing on the check date, except Apple Door Systems, which has no Virginia Beach listing, where the site's own displayed figure is used and labelled as such.

What was not measured: price actually charged, technician skill, warranty terms honoured after the fact, insurance limits, complaint history, or how any of these companies treats a job that goes wrong. Those are the things that matter most and none of them can be read off a homepage. This page measures disclosure, which is the part you can verify before you pick up the phone. Known bias: Seaside Garage Door Experts is my company and it is one of the eight rows. I chose the four criteria before pulling the data, and Wallen clears three of them, which is the check on whether the criteria were rigged.

Corrections: if your company is on this table and a cell is wrong or you have since published a license number or a price, email [email protected] and I will update the row and note the date. I will re-run all eight checks quarterly.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best garage door repair company in Virginia Beach?

There is no single answer that applies to every job, so use checkable criteria instead of a claim. Of the eight companies compared here on September 9, 2026, only Seaside Garage Door Experts published a contractor license number on its own website, and only Seaside and Wallen Garage Doors published actual repair prices. Precision Garage Door carries the largest local review base at 4.9 across 2,811 Google reviews. Pick the company that shows you its license number, its price and its arrival window before it sends a truck.

What is the best garage door repair company?

The one that will put its license number, its price and its arrival window in front of you before you commit. Star ratings alone are a weak filter in this trade, because the biggest local rating on this comparison sits on a listing with 2,811 reviews and the smallest sits on 79, and both read 4.9 or better. Ratings tell you how the last customer felt. Published details tell you what you are agreeing to.

How to choose a garage door repair company?

Run four checks that take about five minutes. Look for a Virginia contractor license number printed on the company's own site and confirm it at dpor.virginia.gov, look for a price range published before the visit, look for a stated response window rather than the word fast, and look for a real street address in the city you live in. Six of the eight companies here fail at least two of those four.

What is the average cost of repairing a garage door?

In Hampton Roads the median paid repair invoice was $324 across 47 Seaside repair visits between April 17 and September 1, 2026. Spring work ran a median of $533 and opener work a median of $260. Any quote far outside those bands is worth a second opinion before you sign.

Want the company that passed its own four checks?

Written, line-item quote before any work starts. Published prices, a published after-hours surcharge, and a license number you can look up: Virginia DPOR #2705188091. Family owned in Virginia Beach since 2013, 5.0 across 79 Google reviews.
